Limits.

Open Project is constantly reflecting and improving on how we do business. We’re aware of The Project’s limits, and we want you to be too.

Manufacturing

Since Open Project started, we have committed to partnering with manufacturers who align with our ethical and environmental values. We have learnt about the importance of third party certifications for environmental and ethical manufacturing practices. Whilst many of our products are made with Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified materials, two of the manufacturers we partnered with for our first recycled product range do not use third party certified recycled materials. We can’t be 100% sure that these materials are truly recycled based on good faith alone. So we are building new partnerships with manufacturers using third party certified recycled materials.

Chalk

Our current supply of chalk is mined from the ground. We are developing partnerships with companies using environmentally friendly methods of chalk production, by means of  extracting chalk from seawater.

Packaging

The Commit crash pad packaging is made from 100% recycled materials, but this can’t be recycled after use in Australia. Our trials with compostable packaging leave the crash pad susceptible to elements like moisture during shipping, and we have so far been unable to find a more sustainable packaging solution that does not compromise our product.

Circularity

On average, an item of clothing is worn 7 or 8 times before being thrown away. We want to reduce textile waste by keeping your gear in play for as long as possible. Open Project currently incentivises product repairs via Social Enterprises with our partner HelloTailr, but we acknowledge financial barriers may reduce repair rates. Ultimately, we aim to transition to a free product repair service.

Transportation

As we launch into full business operations and product postage commences, we will learn how our products are transported from warehouse to consumer. We acknowledge the GHG emissions implicated, and plan to measure postage associated emissions to provide a baseline for reduction initiatives.
